Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The National Research Development Corporation and the Freight Transport Association are inviting suggestions or designs for a system of checking vehicle loading. The object is both to avoid overloading and uneconomical under-loading.

The two bodies suggest that such a device should be an integral part of the vehicle and should indicate immediately to the driver the loadings on each axle. The equipment must be robust, accurate over a long period, require a minimum of recalibration and should not cost more than about £75 per vehicle.

NR DC would like to hear from inventors or firms and would particularly welcome participation, on a joint venture basis, in the development of a system already under study by a company. Those interested should write to the mechanical engineering group of the NRDC at 66-74 Victoria Street, London. S.W.1.
