rtA SPECIAL meeting of the national council of the Road Haulage Association to consider the Transport Bill will be held at Church House, Westminster, on August 27. Normally, the council would not have met again until after the Association's conference in Blackpool in October.
"The Commercial Motor" understands that no statement of policy on the Bill is likely to be made before August 27. The levy is, however, believed to be resented and a strong body of opinion is opposed to the delay in removing the 25-mile limit.
The Government's failure to give priority to ex-hauliers in the purchase of transport units has also cauied disappointment.
Mr. W. E. Foster, secretary of the Devon and Cornwall Area of the Association, said at Plymouth recently, that the R.H.A. was apprehensive about the levy and was opposed to it and other aspects of the Bill.
A28 Scottish trade-union leaders and members of the Labour Party have decided to stage a joint conference in Edinburgh on September 20 to protest against denationalization. A resolution will be moved by a member of the general council of the Scottish Trades Union Congress and a Labour Party speaker.
On the following day there will be a public demonstration to demand the withdrawal of the Transport Bill. _ As . reported in "The Commercial Motor" last week, another demonstration is to be staged at Margate on kugust 31—one day before the congress of the T.U.C. opens. .
In a speech at Shrewsbury, last week, Mr. Gurney Braithwaite, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, defended the inclusion of C-licensees within the scope of the proposed levy on the ground that they would benefit particularly by the denationalization of road haulage.
