pool and North Wales is under repair, and there have been many fears as to how traffic would be affected when the narrow and thickly congested thoroughfare known as Northgate Street is " up." Chester is noted for its trafficridden and dangerous streets.

An inquiry, however, from the city surveyor elicits the information that while that portion of Northgate Street between the junctions of Hunter Street and St. Werhurgh Street is in hand, traffic will be easily diverted along the parallel roadway on the other side of the island

footpaths, and congestion may be relieved by transferring some of the motorbus stations to Hunter Street, It is hoped that the work in the lower part of St. Werburgh Street will then be completed, so that that thoroughfare will be available for traffic when the contractors take up a further length of North-. gate Street from the end of St. Weeburgh Street to the beginning of the stone pavement near Northgate Row. The south endof Northgate Street from that point to the Cross is in good repair.

Attention later will be turned to the position from the County Offices towards the Northgate, when the street will be closed except at the lower end, and traffic must be diverted down George Street or Canal Street, according to the direction required. It is expected that the whole of the work will be completed within a month, though much depends on the weather. The streets are being resurfaced in rock asphalt or a re-in forced. concrete foundation, and a II years' maintenance guarantee is given by the contractors. Half the cost is borne by the Ministry of Transport. The whole of Liverpool Road is being treated with tar macadam grouted with bittiinen.
