Where the collective tank-capacity in respect of tli;2.. automobiles garaged exceeds 15 kilogrammes, fresh regulations for garages have been issued by the Berlin President of Police. He will allow the use of cellars for garaging other than private cars on these conditions alone : (a) Cellars shall be under courtyards or under such buildings as mainly serve for the working of the vehicles or, at any rate, are only employed for business purposes.

(b) They may not be connected with the upper floors.

(c) They shall possess two ramps in different directions, and also a sufficient number of secured means of egress into the open.

The outer walls of garages must be massively constructed, each separate room being shut off by a fire proof ceiling and unpierced and fireproof partition walls at least 10 centimetres (3.937 in.) thick. Windows and skylights must consist of fireproof glass in iron frames. In the case of special one-storey garages, the outer walls of which are at least. 6 metres (19 ft. 8 in.) from the door and window-openings of other buildings, fireproof construction (walls and ceil ings of laths and plaster) and the usual glazing need not be applied, provided only attics or uninhabited rooms lie immediately above them. Where the buildings exceed 20 metres (65 ft. 7 in.) in length, partywalls of a fireproof character must be run up to the roof every 20 metres.

Repairing shops must be separated from the garages by unpierced, fireproof walls at least 10 centimetres thick. The flooring must be fire and oilproof, and must slope down all round to a trough-like depression under the automobile, and possess a ramp towards the exit Doors in front walls must open outwardly. The wall above doors and windows below inhabited rooms must be closed in a fireproof manner at a height of 1 metre (3 ft. 3M.). If not thus closed, an incombustible protective strip (if necessary, oscillating and opening outwards) or a projecting pentroof, which can easily be flapped down, shall be attached.

. Fireplaces in garages are prohibited, only heating apparatus not capable of firing petrol gases being admissible. Registers and heating tubes must, how ever, be protected by wirework or perforated ironplate. Only hermetically-closed electric lamps may be used within a garage for lighting purposes. If necessary, peg-contacts (such as those used in the Berlin Omnibus Co.'s garages) may be used, but under certain conditions. Hand-lamps must be on the Davy principle, or electric. Garage floors must be well ventilated. No petrol cans, empty or otherwise, may be kept in garages or repairing shops ; old polishing rags must be cleared away. As to garages in upper storeys, the floor must have no openings, and lifts must lie outside the buildings. All exits are to be provided with incombustible and impervious thresholds. Garages must possess at least two secured exits, as far distant as possible from each other, and leading to different staircases. Inhabited rooms above the garages must also have exits to different staircases.

Fire-extinguishing means (sand, hydrants, etc.), are required to be in readiness for all larger garages. For draining off the water used in garages, special permission must be obtained from the Municipal Police.
