Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

How does a cycling team (running on an annual budget 100 times smaller than a top Fl team) become involved with a logistics giant such as DHL?

Guy Elliott, DHL Supply Chain Northern Europe CEO, reveals that its a happy coincidence of private interest and business needs, and that the relationship between DHL and Team Sky is probably best described as informal.

Elliott is a keen cyclist, and has been involved with governing body British Cycling (BC) for a long time now — and DHL transports BC's bikes.

Also, as part of DHL's onging commitment to corporate social responsibility, the company recently set up DHL Sprint School to help BC uncover the next Chris Hoy or Victoria Pendleton.

'e're aiming to attract more young people to the sport, and provid them with the opportunity to learn from our top riders," he says.

e hope some of these aspiring riders are able to kick-start thei cycling careers and gain access to the 2012 Olympic developme t programme through attending Sprint School."

El iott describes his relationship with BC as "like a non-executive direttor — they call me in whenever they need help with logistics".

Team Sky operates with the blessing and involvement of BC — and thus the link between Team Sky and DHL was established.

And just as well, because Elliott's help was certainly required, Team Sky is a fresh start-up team and didn't even know about 0-licensing — "so we helped them get an 0-licence," says Elliott.

Team Sky also operates out of DHL's DC at Mechelen, near Brussels, taking up the space of "a bike workshop, say 15,000ft2". Elliott reveals: "We've given them the space. It's our way of returninc the help BC has given us in setting up Sprint School."
