MERCEDES-BENZ IS to end its long-standing loyalty to V-configuration engines in favour of an in-line family of power units that is due to be launched in 2007. The new straight-six line-up — to be offered in 9.9, 12.8, and 14.8-litre versions — will cover the
complete heavy-duty engine lineup and will power the Actros and Axor families in Europe, as well as the Freightliner in the US. Mercedes is one of the last manufacturers of V-configuration engines in the global truck industry, launching a brand new family
of V6 and V8 engines in 1995.
Debates have raged as to the inherent fuel economy benefits of straight-six engines compared with the V6. Advocates of the V configuration maintain that these engines offer performance benefits and space savings.
With Mercedes' parent DaimlerChrysler fixed on global efficiencies, and the highly lucrative US market firmly in the straightsix engine camp, the engineers have been left with little choice.
