On Saturday an ST double-deck open-staircase bus from 1930 went into service again in London — adding a touch of nostalgia to Silver Jubilee Year. It is running as Route 100 between Trafalgar Square and Tower Hill. Both conductor and driver are wearing 1930s uniforms and the old-style tickets being issued will doubtless become collectors' items.
The bus is of a type built for Thomas Tilling, one of the companies brought together to form what is now London Transport. During the war it went to Birmingham and returned in 1944. After a period with BRS as a mobile canteen it was sold and remained in a scrapyard until discovered by a group of enthusiasts in 1966. It was renovated in 1971.
Route 100 is a joint venture between London Transport, Obsolete Fleet Ltd — owner of the bus — and Burberrys Ltd.
