PLANS to pedestrianise part of Cardiff City centre have caused a rift between City of Cardiff Transport and South Glamorgan County Council.
Under the plan buses will be excluded from certain shopping streets in the City.
Now the transport department is about to serve notice on the county under section 203 of the Local Government Act 1972, to recover the bus revenue that would be lost when the scheme is implemented.
Two estimates of the amount of revenue lost have been prepared.
The lower estimate of £180,000 per year covers longer running times needed for buses to avoid the pedestrianised area, and also the additional cost of fuel.
A higher figure of E440.000 per year also includes loss of revenue that would arise were buses to be excluded from the area.
City of Cardiff Transport general manager David Smith told CM he was in favour of the pedestrianisation scheme, but did not see why his undertaking should pay the cost of it.
