Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A DELEGATION FROM the Scottish Road Haulage Association met Scotland's Secretary of State for Transport Douglas Alexander last week to highlight the difficulties the industry is facing.

The group comprised Phil Flanders and Pat Glancey from the Road Haulage Association, and hauliers Bobby Bayne of R&D Bayne, Eddie Magilton from .Ramage Distribution, and Trevor Boyd from Boyd's Transport.

Trevor Boyd was a last-minute replacement forAbercleen haulier Sandy Bruce. whose firm ceased trading last month, lie says Sandy Bruce's plight reflects the state of the industry: "A long-established, well-run business in Scotland has gone by the wayside.

"1 told the minister I felt that road haulage doesn't get the respect it deserves for the contribution it makes to the UK economy."

Issues raised by the delegates included the high cost of fuel, the effects of foreign competition and the Working Time Directive. They told Alexander of the industry's concerns that a review of the WTD would remove the current periods of availability.

Also on the agenda was the need for more effective action against illegal foreign operation, and for UK hauliers to play their part.

• The Scottish Parliament is due to respond this month to a report from its Local Government and Transport Committee on the state of freight transport in Scotland.
