Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

QAfter many months of buying your magazine I am seriously thinking of becoming an owner-driver. My present employer is the Post Office, where I have been employed for the past 10 years as a driver, ranging from Escorts up to Class 1 artics. I would appreciate some advice on how to go about it. For example, how do you charge for a load — by tonnage or mileage? What kind of insurance would I need, and would I have to join the RHA?

DC, Edinburgh A Becoming an owner-driver is not difficult if you follow the rules.

Firstly, you will need an Operator's licence — that entails, among other things, having a Certificate of Professional Competence. Obtain that first and then you can judge from the rest of the requirements if your goal is achieveable. To get a CPC you can contact your local college or obtain a home study pack.

You do not have to join the RHA, but it is advisable. As far as charging for work is concerned consult the Tables of Operating Costs section in the forthcoming 1990 'Commercial Motor Buyers Guide'. There are a number of brokers who specialise in HGV cover.
