IS THIS the ambulance of the future? Volkswagen's new aerodynamic front-line ambulance made an impressive debut recently at the Ambex show in Blackpool. It has been developed by VAG jointly with Taurus Bodies of Stockport, and, in liaison with the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service who will be taking the first model.
The van-based model has a specially turbocharged 65kW(87hp) version of the LT31's six-cylinder petrol engine giving it sub 25-second 0-60mph times. Other features include limited slip differential, a split-circuit charging system and an emergency dump switch that can be used to cut off fuel, alternator and battery.
Its advanced bodywork has an unusual front roof moulding with faired-in lights which gives improved airflow and better roadholding. A rear spoiler is also fitted.
By using an ultra-light carbonfibre-based combined rear bumper and loading step, VW has avoided cutting into the van's rear cross member and repositioning its fuel tank — two measures normally necessary when fitting conventional steps to van-based ambulances.
Prices for the fullyequipped LT31 ambulance have not been released, although VAG claims vanbased ambulance conversions can save up to 0,000 over conventional coach-built chassis-cab models.
Whatever the impact of the VW's new vehicle, manufacturers are unlikely to see any sudden changes in the currently depressed and highly competitive UK ambulance market before the end of 1985.
According to Wadham Stringer's general sales naz ager Michael Harfield: "Th4 are too many manufactur chasing too few orders." H field says that sales of fro] line ambulances have dropc from around the 1,000 un sold in 1982 to a project 1985 level of only 600.
Wadham Stringer has be developing its Modular Inti changeable Ambulance Bo (MIAB) concept since it w launched last year. A ric version is now available the Mercedes 310 chassis c which joins the existii models for Bedford, Ford al Freight Rover chassis.
