Admission as a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Carmen and a Freeman of the City of London is not something that one readily associates with a midshipman RNVR, to whom any kind of freedom must be a sick joke. It is, however, an honour that was bestowed in 1945 on John Wells, the inspired national secretary of the Commercial Motor Lorry Driver of the Year Competition.
Fifteen years later he had the distinction of becoming a member of the court (the governing body) of the Worshipful Company. As a liveryman he is following a family tradition established by his grandfather (John), his great uncle (Arthur) and his father who died at the age of only. 33. John has now been elected junior warden and will be much in evidence at the installation of the Master on October 18 at the Tallow Chandler's Hall and St Stephen's Church, Walbrook.
The family connection with the Worshipful Company is being perpetuated also by John's nephew, Larry Monk, who is engaged in shipping in Holland.
