Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ERCEDES BENZ is un;iling two new engines at ;xt week's Frankfurt show. he 0M422 is a naturally ipirated unit and the OM:2LA is both turbocharged id charge cooled. This is the -st time Mercedes Benz has fered a turbocharged V8 for rtomotive use.

The 0M422 is developed orn the existing V8 400 series at the bore and stroke have en increased to bring the ipacity up from 12.8 litres 81 cuin) to 14.82 litres (892 In naturally aspirated form le 422 develops a maximum )6 kW (280bhp) at 2300 rpm. laximum torque is 1040 Nm 67lbft) at 1200rpm.

A de-fuelled version will, iys MB, be available later 'hich will put out 184kW (250 hp) at 2300prm with 833Nm f torque (6311bft) at 1200 )m. These two new engines how current design trends, eveloping torque at low revs. But the most interesting of le new engines is the turboharged charge-cooled OM42LA, which develops a hefty 76 kW (375 bhp), and 1550 im (11431bft) at 1200rpm. Mercedes Benz is quick to point out that the V8 0M402 will continue in production.

For Britain the 1619, 1626S and 1632S with their respective V6, V8 and VIO engines will be marketed for some time to come.

The high torque back-up of the 0M422 will, says Mercedes Benz, put it alongside welldesigned turbocharged units. With its flexibility, the makers say it will be both economical and reduce gearchanging on long inclines. At the top of the range the turbocharged 0M422LA is fitted to the 1638 and to make room for it the "New Generation" cab has been enlarged. It is now wider and has greater internal space.

Most of the increases in cab size were necessary to accommodate the charge cooling and extra cooling capacity for the new unit.

The twin turbochargers are mounted at the back of the power unit and linked to the exhaust by multiseetion pipes.

Another departure for Mercedes Benz at the Frankfurt show is the option of Fuller gearboxes
