• Huge back-log of maintenance and a year's delay in the arrival of new buses led Eastern Counties assistant traffic manager, Mr Peter Littman, to describe bus services in Norwich on Tuesday as "disastrous".
The news came on the same day that Eastern Counties announced that its inspectors had been issued with VHF radios
linked to a central control and designed to give maximum fleet effectiveness.
Another spokesman for the company said that 19 of 75 buses were missing from service and 64 were in the garage for at tention by a half-strength maintenance force. The problem was long-standing and had come to a head with children returning to school this week.
