Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• In our August 17 issue we published an article on York Trailer Co Ltd's current publicity campaign "Operation Snowball" included in it an example of the kind of advertisement York were using in the campaign.

A statement appeared in this advertisement and was also quoted in the text of our article which attributed to the Chairman and British Railways Board an intention to follow a course of action that would result in a further contraction of rail services.

York, in a public apology to Mr Marsh and the British Railways Board, has said that although recent newspaper reports of Mr Marsh's future policy proposals have referred to the possible reduction of track routes and facilities, the British Railways Board have pointed out that the statement in the advertisement is untrue. York have therefore unequivocally retracted it.

We wish to endorse this retraction and express regret for any embarrassment our report of the advertisement may have caused.
