• Sutton and Sons (St Helens) Ltd is evaluating an Atkinson 30-ton-gvw rigid eight-wheeler as an alternative to using maximum capacity artics: the vehicle is fitted with a sub-frame designed to ISO dimensions and is capable of carrying a range of• different sizes of container.
The tests are being carried out with demountable tanks between 2500 and 4000 gal capacity. The rigid eight-wheeler with the Gardner 6LXB 188 hp engine meets the minimum legal power to weight ratio requirement of 6bhp per ton.
A spokesman for the company told CM that it was unable to quote definite figures so far but it appeared that the economic balance firmly favoured the used of rigids.
