TWO TRUCK DRIVERS are starting jail sentences this week after faking hijackings.

Andrew Carvell of Daventry admitted charges of theft and attempting to pervert the course of justice after £18,000 worth of alcohol went missing from his truck. Birmingham Crown Court jailed him for 21 months.

And Brentford driver Barry Webb has been sent to prison for his part in the robbery of £300,000 worth of mobile phones in Surrey.

Carvell had told police that he was forced to stop by a van swerving in front of him and was then made to drive to a location in Witton, Birmingham where his cargo was taken; the claims sparked a major police inquiry. But CCTV footage showed Carvell willingly following the van. He later admitted that he had agreed to take part in the scam after being promised £500 by a man he met in a pub.

Webb had claimed that he had been threatened at gunpoint and forced to drive to a secluded location where his load of 2,000 Nokia phones was stolen.

A police investigation revealed several holes in his story. When Webb appeared at Guildford Crown Court, he was found guilty andjailed for three years.

DS Ian Bosher, who led the investigation.says:"I am delighted that this man, who went to great lengths to try and pass himself off as a victim, has been given the justice he deserves."
