NEIL CUMMING: VI, BRISTOL

The Vehicle Inspectorate booklet which sets out the categorisation of defects and which lays down the standards which will be used by the VI will be republished in early January.

This will show that, while there will be relatively few changes from the existing classifications, some defects will have been changed from delayed to immediate and others from immediate to delayed, with "a few trivial defects" being downgraded.

COMPARISONS

The current full list, entitled 'Categorisation of Defects' is available to operators from District Offices of the VI or from HMSO and the new, revised list under which the new scheme will operate will be similarly available from January Comparisons between the present scheme and the new one are not yet possible as the whole thing is not yet finalised but it will be a relatively straightforward business to compare the old and the new once the new version is published.

It was intended that the new scheme would be introduced from 1 November this year but, owing to the need to train examiners there has been some unavoidable slippage, initially to 1 December but it now seems likely that some further delay will occur so that the introduction of the scheme coincides with the availability of the Categorisation booklet, from 1 January 1994.
