• An animal haulage driver from Oxon has been fined a total of £300 with £269 costs following a mutine check of livestock haulage vehicles on the M6 near Perry Bar in the West Midlands last April.
Stephen Robert Wells of Arncott, Bicester, pleaded guilty to three charges brought by the Environmental Services department of Birmingham City Council. It carried out the check in association with West Midlands police.
Birmingham magistrates heard that Wells, who was driving for Hoperofts Transport of Aylesbury, Bucks, had failed to provide adequate litter on the floor for his consignment of 135 fat pigs. This is an offence under the Transit of Animals (Road & Rail) Order 1975.
In addition, Wells pleaded guilty to using a vehicle which had not been cleaned and disinfected since last used, before the animals were loaded and for doing so knowingly.
These are offences under arti cies included in the Movement and Sale of Pigs Order 1975.
Legislation covering the carriage of livestock by road is controlled by the Animal Health Act 1981.
