• Sixteen Leigh Environmental drivers have won a 1.5% pay rise following a four-month fight against a wage freeze at the company's Bredbury depot near Stockport The United Road Transport Union has been promised further pay talks which could lead to another rise in the spring URTU regional officer Stan Parkinson says: "The pay freeze was imposed because the firm wanted to control cashflow while it was selling parts of its operation and buying new businesses" Pay talks are conducted regionally at the waste management firm's depots. "We have asked them to move towards a national agreement," says Parkinson, "but they seem to prefer the regional system and unfortunately that seems to be the trend for a lot of transport firms these days."
