The road by-passes the village of Little Eaton and replaces the existing overloaded and congested length of the A61 trunk road. It runs northwards from the roundabout at the eastern end of the Allestree link road to join the Ripley-Swanwick-Alfreton By-pass, east of Holbrook, due to open next month. When both schemes are complete, there will be a continuous high standard dual carriageway route from Derby to the MI east of Alfreton (Junction 28).

A road deck is to be built on the Britannia railway bridge to carry the A5 London-Holyhead trunk road across the Menai Straits together with the provision of the necessary approach roads.

The Secretaries of State for the Environment and for Transport have fixed the route of the 7km (4-mile) Canterbury by-pass in accordance with the draft Order published earlier this year. As construction of the flyover will free th' Al from cross-over traffic the existinl roundabout will be removed and replaced by length of dual two. lane carriageway linkin; Al and Al(M). A system of slip and link road will connect both roads.

Work will start soon on the second stage o the West Rattenraw Diversion of the A6' Sunderland-Carlisle trunk road. It will b carried out by Northumberland Count; Council Direct Labour Organisation an should take about two and a half years ti complete.

The scheme will replace a section of th existing trunk road between Tunnel Top an Haydon Bridge and a new bridge will be buil over the railway at West Rattenraw imm€ diately west of Haydon Bridge.

Maintenance work on the M4 east of th Crindau Tunnels, Newport, will mean Ian closures and diversions for about a month.
