FOR the first, time, it is claimed, LC.I. Heavy Organic Chemicals Division have used a flexible Portolite tank to transport a consignment of petroleum chemical products by road. Two thousand gallons (over 7 tons) of iso,octanoL were carried to a U.K. customer from the division's works at Billingham, Co. Durham. The round trip was one' of several hundred .miles.
The Portolite tank was filled on the deck of a Foden eight-wheeled platform lorry and was then lashed down with ropes; no built-up sides were required to restrain surge in the tank. When full, the container measured approximately
23-ft. in length and 8 ft. in width, with a height of 2 ft. 6 in. When the 'empty container was rolled for the return journey, it took up only about 3 ft. of the platform.
Portolite flexible tanks are -made by
Marston Excelsior, Ltd., an subsidiary. They were described in The Commercial Motor, November 21, 1958. The container used for this consignment had an interior fining of rayon-reinforced butyl rubber which, being inert' to isooctanol, ensured that the product arrived at the customer's works-in the same condition of high purity as when it left Billingham.
