Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SALES of A.E.C. vehicles showed an increase of well over 200 per cent., compared with the figures for the 1958 Show. Although buyers indicated a definite trend towards quality built medium-weight chassis, there was considerable interest in heavy chassis also.

For example, Smith and Robinson, Ltd., Rothwell, Leeds, ordered another 12 Mammoth Major V eight-wheeled chassis, which will be equipped with 3,600-gal. tanker bodies for edible and fuel oils and chemicals.

Allison's Transport, Ltd., Dundee, ordered a total of 20 A.E.C. chassis, 10 of which were Mercury, with five each of Mammoth Major eight-wheelers and Mandators. S. Jeery and Sons, Liverpool, ordered six Mammoth Major eight-wheelers and six Mercury tractors.

Six Reliance passenger chassis were ordered by David McBrayne, Glasgow, and three Leicestershire operatorsErringtons, of Evington, Murphy Bros.,. of Syston, and A. Moseley, Coach Traders, of Loughborough—ordered a total of 10 similar chassis.

The Marshal six wheeled chassis has been well received, particularly as the basis of mobile concrete mixers. The St. Ives Sand and Gravel Co., St. Ives, Hunts, have ordered six and Concrete Engineering Services, Ltd., Leeds, have ordered 12. Marco Aggregates, Ltd., Thorpe, Surrey, placed orders for two, adding to the total of more than 50 firm inquiries for this chassis model.

MISSING THE. SNOW

BAD weather? Telephone inquirers can get information about the state of the roads in many parts of the country now the road weather service of the G.P.O. has restarted for the winter. It began on Saturday and will operate until April 30, next year. The reports, compiled by the Automobile Association, will refer to road conditions in areas of about 50 miles from most of the large centres.

The dialling codes are: London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. ASK 6111; Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Leeds, 938; Bristol, 956.

MORE REGISTRATIONS

PROVISIONAL figures issued on 1 Tuesday by the Ministry of Transport showed that the number of new registrations in August, last, was 90,345 compared with 73,964 in August, 1959.

cP10 EIGHT SCOTTISH APPEALS LISTED

EEIGHT appeals have been listed for hearing in Scotland next week by the Transport Tribunal. All will be heard in the Scottish Land Court, I Grosvenor Crescent, Edinburgh, 12.

On October 11, at 10.30 a.m., two appeals by Andrew Geddes, one by E. B. Christofferson, and one by Arthur Nicol (Haulage Contractors), Ltd., will be heard. In all four appeals the British Transport Commission is the respondent. There are 17 private haulage respondents to one of the Geddes appeals, and four to the Nicol appeal.

The next day, appeals by Gavin Wilkie, Ltd., the B.T.C. and three other hauliers against two grants to McKelvie and Co. (B.M. and P.), Ltd., will be heard. On the same day the joint appeal of the B.T.C., John Barrie (Contractor), Ltd., and another haulier will be heard. An appeal by the B.T.C., in which Road Services (Forth), Ltd., is respondent, appears in the cause list for October 13.

BLACKPOOL TRAFFIC PROPOSALS OADING and unloading facilities, as well as the siting of bus stops, parking bays and taxi ranks and the possible alteration to one-way streets, had yet to be discussed with the chief constable and other chief officers of the town, Blackpool Highways Committee has been told.

The committee has recommended to the town council a plan proposing the installation of 546 parking meters in 38 of the 50 streets in the centre of Blackpool. Parking would be totally prohibited in the 12 remaining unmetered streets.

Lim. Contracts For Leyland Group

ORDERS totalling more than flm. were received by the Leyland Group during last week, and these were placed by operators in Australia, Ceylon, Ireland, Malaya and Uruguay. These are in addition to the orders totalling £11m. which the Leyland Group received from Iran, Israel and South Africa during the previous week.

The largest single contract is worth £320,000. and is for 170 Albion Chieftain tipping chassis required by the Malay Public Works Department. These chassis are to be fitted with dumper bodies. Coras Iompair Eireann has ordered 80 Leyland Leopard bus chassis, valued at over £170,000, whilst Coinpania Uruguaya de Transportes Collectivos S.A., Montevideo, has ordered 30 Leyland Royal Tiger Worldmaster bus chassis.

Sixty Leyland Comet passenger chassis have been ordered by the Transport Board, Ceylon, whilst the Brisbane City Council, Australia, have called for 12 Worldmaster buses with fully automatic transmission, which will be assembled at the Leyland plant in Melbourne.

SEVERN BRIDGE—AND TOLLS WORK is to commence soon on VV the £16m. Severn Bridge scheme, which should be completed by 1965-66, the Ministry of Transport announced last week. The construction of the suspension bridge, which will cross the Severn between Aust and Beachley (where a service ferry now operates) will be phased with the construction of the Forth Road Bridge, which is now well under way.

The Severn Bridge will be financed, by tolls. Details of these charges will be worked out during construction of the bridge, stated the Ministry. A special Act will be necessary to empower the Ministry to impose the tolls.

It is estimated that the bridge will save 50 miles for South Wales traffic. The Severn Bridge itself will cost £l lm.; the adjacent Wye will cost the remaining £5m.

BUILD MOTORWAY—CALL

PRIORITY should be given to building a Sheffield-Leeds motorway, the Minister of Transport, Mr. Ernest Marples, is to be urged by Yorkshire local authorities who met in Wakefield last Friday. The meeting expressed "complete dissatisfaction" with a letter from the Minister saying that it might not be possible to start on the SheffieldLeeds section of the motorway during the next five or six years. The Minister has been asked to receive a deputation from the authorities.

CHANGE OF BASE A TRANSFER of base from Portohello to Juniper Green was authorized for John Bryce (Contractors), Ltd., of Juniper Green, Edinburgh, by the Scottish Licensing Authoritit last week. The Authority granted continuation of a B licence for four vehicles and allowed the inclusion of road-making material on the licence for one vehicle.

Board Alterations If Merger Occurs

CHANGES will be made in the board

of Small and Parkes. Ltd., if the company accept the offer by Cape Asbestos Co., Ltd., to acquire their ordinary capital. Mr. R. H, Dent and Mr. T. C. Hale, joint managing directors of Cape Asbestos, will join the board of Small and Parkes, with Mr. Dent as chairman.

Mr., G. W. Parkes will relinquish the position of chairman, but will continue as joint managing director tintil April 30 next. The present directors will continue in office. After April 30 it is proposed that Mr. A. H. Parkes shall be sole managing director. Mr. D. W. Douglas will give up his executive directorship on November 30, but will continue in an advisory capacity.
