FURTHER investigationinto the claims of the trolleybus as a means for conserving dollars and reducing the dependence of road transport on imported fuels, is suggested by Mr. Frank S. Taylor, general manager of Newcastle-on-Tyne Transport Department, in his annual report.
"For many years," he says, the Ministry of Transport has encouraged municipalities to convert their tramway systems to trolley-vehicle operation, but a recent statement has been issued by the Ministry which indicates that future policy must be a matter for local decision, as the problem is too ' speculative ' to merit any guidance from the Ministry.
"It would have been of much more value to perplexed transport operators if the Ministry had stated the factors which had influenced this decision, and it is still considered that in the national interest this matter should receive further attention from the Government."
Mr. Taylor also stresses the importance of securing maximum output per vehicle by using both manpower and vehicles to their fullest capacity.
