Omitting Engines and Transmission Units, which are Dealt with on Other Pages, this Article Comprehensively Covers the Principal Parts that Make Up the Modern Chassis

THE motor-manufacturing industry is now so highly organized that practically every component part of the chassis is available under a familiar trade name and can be obtained from a concern of specialists. With the exception of engines and transmission units (dealt with in separate articles), we propose, in this article, to cover the principal chassis units.

Starting with frames and frame memhers, these can be obtained assembled or unassembled, according to drawings provided, rolled sections of special shape being available for supporting wings, running boards, batteries, tanks, etc. The names of Vickers, Ltd., the Projectile and Engineering Co., Ltd., and the Pressed Steel Co., of Great Britain, Ltd., are familiar, several other names being appended in the index to this article. Rolled channels for the heavier types of frame are obtainable from the Dorman Long concern and others.

Lighter pressings for wings, bonnets, silencers, tanks and such parts are made by E. G. Brown and Co., Ltd., Thompson Brothers (Bilson), Ltd., and many other companies, whilst heavy presswork, comprising axle casings, brake drums, hub shells, dashboards, brake reaction plates, engine bearers, etc., are specialities of the Rubery Owen, Joseph Sankey, Steel Stampings, and William Goodyear companies.

• Springs are now built to requirements In a number of forms, including main leaves with fdrged eyes, curled second leaves, stabilizer leaves (or snubbers), etc., and can be obtained with ordinary or reverse camber, built for progressive action or as auxiliaries for existing

springs. The name of Jonas Woodhead is familiar to everyone in the trade.

A comparative innovation is the Grass air spring, which can be used alone or in conjunction with leaf springs.. Coil springs are made by the Terry, Cary and other specialist Concerns. Spring shackles, also, are a speciality, uncommon kinds being the Silentbloc (with rubber bush) and the Fafnir (with ball bearings). Recoil dampers for commercial vehicles are now offered by several people, notable makes being the Roadaille and Newton.

The manufacture of pressed-steel wheels is nowadays concentrated to 'i comparatively small number of wellknown companies, including the Dunlop, William Goodyear and Steel Stampings concerns ; detachable rims are generally available, a notable make being the Goodyear K-type rim.

Standard brake gear is made by such concerns as Alford and Alder (Engineers), Ltd., whilst various special tYPes are now available to increase the braking power. Amongst these may be mentioned the Bendix self-energizing shoes, the famous Dewandre vacuum brake, the Knorr and Westinghouse compressed-air brakes, and the Lockheed hydraulic brake. The last-named is now available with a compound master cylinder to give added leverage, also with outside telescopic wheel cylinders, and it may be combined as a unit with the Dewandre vacuum cylinder.

Other vacuum brakes are made by the Marelli, Westinghouse and Peters companies, whilst the Cary, Neate, Low-Loading, Brockhouse and. Scammen trailer brakes are largely used.

Ball and roller beatings are made not only for journal and thrust loads, but for the two stresses in combination, and in every useful size.

Front axles are made by several big forges, and trade suppliers include Alford and Alder, Clayton, Kirkstall, etc.

Proprietary steering gears of the worm-and-sector, cam, and other popular types, are made in all sizes. Chassis lubrication has received the careful attention of specialists, great efforts being made to eliminate pipe blockage in centralized systems. .
