A Summary of Trailers, Regarded as, a Part of the Equipment for Aug; menting the Revenue-earning Capacity of a Lorry

IT is unnecessary here to enlarge upon the trailer as an economic proposition; the wide use that is made of such units is a forceful indication of their ability to increase ti e earning capacity of a motor vehicle. From the point of the haulier, the main difficulty lies not in deciding on the

. use of a trailer, but in determining what trailer or type of trailer he shall use.

A large variety of trailers is produced by the Eagle Engineering Co. Ltd. It would, indeed, be hard to find a purpose for which no vehicle in its range were suitable, for the products of this concern include two-wheeled trailers adaptable to almost all forms of light haulage, four-wheeled trailers of a capacity up to 10 tons, and six-wheelers and eight-wheelers for loads of exceptional magnitude.

The name Eccles is associated mainly with two-wheeled horsebox trailers and light caravans. The latest models produced by Eccles Motor Caravans, Ltd., are well equipped and embody improvements upon previous vehicles.

One of the . few makers who employ Ackerman steering for trailers is Scammell Lorries, Ltd. On the latest chassis the drawbar operates the steering-gear mechanism, which is of the car type ; that is to say, both fruit wheels are mounted on stub axles pivoting about 'kingpins. at both ends of the front axle.

The range of trailers made by John Fowler and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., extends from a two-wheeler intended for 2-ton loads to a 16-wheeler built to carry 80 tons. The more popular intermediate models are a 5-6-ton pneumatictyred trailer, a 20-ton rubber-tyred model, and another' capable of carrying 50 tons. Four-wheeled trailers and articulating two-wheeled trailers of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10-ton capacity are made by Sandou Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd. The former are of the turntable type and all are fitted with pneumatic tyres.' Lighter vehicles also are built.. Made in sizes from 3-ton to 7-ton capacity, the four-. wheeled trailers produced by Ransomes, Simi and Jefferies, Ltd., are extremely well known. Pneumatic and solid-' tyred trailers are available, or steel-tyred vehicles specially Intended for agricultural work and work in the Colonies in places where conditions prohibit highspeeds.

An interesting trailer was recently built by the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. for Leeds Corporation. With a loading level of 15 ins., it is equipped, for Heavy loads.

Taskers of Andover, Ltd., lists a range of two, four and six-wheeled trailers for loads of from 1 ton to 12 tons.

Pneuniatic-tyred four-wheeled trailers for loads of from 5 tons to 10 tons are made by Sentinel Waggon Works, Ltd. The chassis frames are built up of rolled-steel members and various types of body are available.

Special trailers with bodies built to particular requirements are manufactured by R. C. Bauly, (1931), Ltd. A standard and a tipping trailer for 5-6-ton loads are made by Fodens, Ltd. Both. have 'pneumatic tyres and are. equipped with screw-on brakes operated by a hand wheel at the side of the trailer, or by a cable and chain from the towing vehicle.

Three four-wheeled trailers with capacities of from 3 tons to 6 tons, as well as an 8-10-ton sixwheeler and a 12-15-ton timber trailer equipped with Westinghouse servo brakes are regularly produced by Frederick Braby and Co., Ltd.

Specialities embodied in the wide range of trailers made by It. A. Dyson and Co., Ltd., are the revolving numberplate which enables four different registration numbers to be exhibited at will, the "Eason" screw-down trailer brake, and the quick-action "Easyon " coupling device.

Trailers and semi-trailers of medium capacity are the standard products of Carrirnore Six-Wheelers, Ltd. in addition to the 6-ton four-wheeler equipped with tipping gear, recent examples of this concern's products are a 5-6-ton four-wheeled trailer, equipped with a front gantry to enable long loads to be carried, and a van-type semi-trailer with a capacity of no less than 1,500 cubic ft.

Engaged in the production of two-wheeled trailers, B._Pixon-Bate manufacture a range of light vehicles designed for numerous commercial purposes and for light loads.

The Kingston Engineering Co., Ltd., produces a trailer with Ackerman steering and pneumatic tyres, which is said to possess great stability at high speeds. Electrically welded frames are a noteworthy feature of the Harrow four-wheeled trailers. Two representative models are a 10-ton machine with solid tyres and a loading line of 2 ft. 4 ins., and .a 2-ton model equipped with the Harrow safety-brake-gear.

An exceptionally wide range of trailers is produced by Cranes (Dereham), -Ltd. . This comprises four-wheeled machines of from 3 tons to 8 tons capacity, and special chassis built to carry excavators. The concern else specializes in the manufacture of split-type disc wheels.

A specialist in two-wheeled trailers, in addition to its range of heavier machines, 3. Brockhouse and Co., Ltd., makes numerous types of light trailer. for commercial purposes, ranging in capacities of from 2 cwt. to 12 cwt. The four-wheelers made by this concern include trailers of capacities up to 10 tons. '

A special design of drawbar known as the "floating Boom" is a feature of the De Ronet two-wheeled trailer.

Among the special features of the trailers produced by G. Scammell and Nephew, Ltd., are oversize Timken roller-bearings and totally enclosed brakes.
