NEWCASTLE-UPON-Tyne operator Ramage Transport has taken delivery of 10 Euro-5 Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks following back-to-back fuel economy trials involving other vehicles.
The haulier's Actros 2545 BigSpace tractor units, supplied by local dealership Bell Truck and Van, are each expected to cover 250,000km a year. Palletways member Ramage obtained demonstrators from several suppliers and ran them against each other.
Operations director Robin Ramage Jr — son of MD Robin Sr — said: "The Mercedes new Actros recorded the best figures by a significant margin. It was a full mile per gallon better than our established fleet vehicles. When you come across a truck that produces an improvement of that magnitude, it gets your attention."
The trucks will be double-shifted, and run regularly to the South East and Scotland.
"The distances involved meant that even small differences in mpg performance would have a major effect on running costs, so a full fuel evaluation was the obvious way forward," he explained.
