Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Cummins is warning against the indiscriminate use of fuel and oil additives in its engines. Although it agrees that there may be shortterm benefits of using the special additives, in the longer term it says they can lead to premature engine failure.

The engine manufacturer points out that some fuel additives can actually harm engines and that cetane improvers are unnecessary where fuel quality can be assured. Oil additives, such as graphite, may reduce friction by plating bearing surfaces but they can sometimes block the filter.

Cummins says that extended drain periods have largely come about by increasing the sump capacity and not through the use of special oils or additives.

As to extending drain periods on existing engines Cummins says: We disapprove of any oil suppliers, additive supplier or oil analysis laboratories recommending an extension of the 'B check intervals (16,000 km)." If any user follows such recommendations and extends the lubricating oil change, and if a failure occurs due to inadequate lubrication, Cummins will have no responsibility under any applicable warranties.
