In a letter to the Road Haulage Association (CM 31 Oct-6
Nov) Chope said the UK would oppose all moves to introduce the lower limit. The Dutch, who currently hold the presidency of the Council of Ministers, are keen to push it through the Maastricht meetings scheduled for December.
Germany supports the UK stance, but its backing alone would not be enough to block a united stand by ministers from the other 10 EC states.
A move to introduce a 48hour maximum working week throughout the EC might also be made in December. The UK Government, the RHA and FTA are opposing the plan.
