• The new Volkswagen Transporter range now includes long wheelbase and chassis-cab models. High-roof versions should go on sale in January or February next year, but buyers will have to wait until the end of 1992 for four-wheel-drive.
Stephen Butts, VW's new commercial vehicle marketing manager, says the Transporter is being well received, On a target market share of 10%, it took 9.4% in August and 8.4% in September.
Butts hopes for sales of around 400 Polo and Golf carderived vans next year. He says
that the MkIll Golf van will be a hatchback like the current model. However, Butts does not discount the possibility of a estate-based model later (CM 5-11 Sept).
He also revealed that the naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre diesel used in the LT range might be dropped. The standard engine would then be the petrol catalyst, based on the same inline six-cylinder block as the diesel. The turbo-diesel engine would be offered as the only option. Exhaust emissions were given as the reason for dropping the naturally-aspirated diesel.
