• Scania has revealed more details of its forthcoming heavy truck models, including a new nine-speed gearbox, optional automatic chassis lubrication, and a range of charge-cooled engines which meet Euro-1 emissions legislation.
While the engine line-up is essentially as predicted, the new GR900 gearbox is an interesting development, coming hot on the heels of the 14-speed GRS900 transmission announced with the latest Streamline models last year (CM 6-12 Dec 1990).
Although the nine-speeder is said to share some parts with the GRS900, it is based around a four-speed main gearbox rather than a three-speed unit, and combines this with a rangechange and crawler (the 14speeder has a range-change and splitter with two crawlers).
Scania (GB) says that the two transmissions will be offered in
parallel on the more powerful tractive units in its range, although the characteristics of the gearboxes mean that, while the R143 500 gets the GRS900 as standard, the R143 400 and 450 get the GR900. The nine-speed gearbox can also be equipped with a torque converter for heavy haulage applications, and is redesignated GRH900.
However, no information is available on when the new gearboxes will arrive in the UK, and this also applies to the low-emission engines.
So far, only the R143 500 has gone on sale here, with the arrival of the rest "still under discussion", but expected some time during 1992.
The full range with Scania's nominal power ratings comprise: nine-litre 220, 250, 280; 11-litre 320,360,380 (EDC), 400 (EDC, turbo-compound); 14-litre 420, 450, 500 (EDC).
Of these, only the 11-litre 380 is unlikely to come to the UK, according to Scania (GB).
Automatic chassis lubrication will also be offered as an option, and, when combined with automatic slack adjusters, Scania says that servicing intervals can be increased by 50%: up to 45,000km on long-distance work, and up to 30,000Iun on distribution.
No information is available yet on cost or availability of these additions.
