He is the protagonist in a musical play produced by the Flying Tortoise company with the ancouragement of the Department of Transport. He foolishly played in the road and iost both his hop and his role as star of an insect circus. •
The Freddie of Roadway House is much more likely to be driven hopping mad by the tortoises among the members who for years have resisted attempts to streamline the organisation. Nothing daunted, the new RHA director-general committed himself at the Association's annual conference at Bournemouth to campaign for a reduction in area offices and a more commercial attitude — heresy, for which not long ago he would have been burnt at the stake.
"Fifty years ago the sum of human knowledge doubled every 15 years — 10 years ago it was said to double every seven years," Freddie Plaskett recalled.
"But not in the RHA," a cynical colleague muttered.
Freddie has a long hoe to row. He has cooked his goose but like a good soldier he will lie on it.
