M9—Scammell L9—Leyland, Scotland THE TRUCK and Bus division of Leyland has a display of 16 vehicles plus a further seven which can be seen on the stands of the distributors.

Pride of place goes to the new Octopus, described in detail in last week's CM. Powered by a new version of the 500 Series fixed head engine—designated the 502—the eight-wheeler has a kerb weight of 7.6 tonnes (7.5 tons) in 5.8m (19ft) wheelbase form. The power output for the 502 is given as 153kW (205bhp) at 2,40Orpm.

Another new version of the 500 unit, called the 501, is now standard to the Lynx and Bison ranges while the 502 is available as an option for the Bison. The power output of the 501 is 128kW (172bhp) at 2,400rpm which compares with the 121kW (162bhp) of the 500.

Leyland Scotstoun is showing the Clydesdale along with the six-wheel Reiver while the Bathgate-built Terrier TR 738 is shown as representing the non-hgv licence vehicle.

Two versions of the top of the range Marathon are displayed on the Southall stand in standard and sleeper-cab form, both powered by the turbocharged TL12 sixcylinder engine. The Marathon made its first show appearance at the Scottish Show in 1973.

Vehicles from the specialist range include a Scammell Crusader tractive unit with a 209kW (280bhp) Rolls-Royce engine and an eight-wheeler Routeman again with R-R power—in this case the 164kW (220bhp) model. Although it has been announced that pro duction of Guy vehicles is to cease, two versions of the 32ton tractive unit are on show, featuring Cummins and RollsRoyce engines.

The bus exhibits from the Leyland group include a 9.1m (30ft) Fleetline double-decker with bodywork by Eastern Coachworks for the Scottish Bus group and an 11.3m (37ft) Leyland National for Grampian. A Redline 550 FG model minibus can be seen on the stand of McLays of Kirkintilloch.
