Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Applications by D. W. Hill (Transport) Ltd. and Castor Haulage Ltd. before the Eastern deputy LA, Mr. Gerald Kidner, took all day last Friday and will be continued on November 14.

Both firms concerned are owned by Mr. David William Hill, and operate from Castor, just outside Peterborough.

Each firm asked for B licence variations to carry building and road-making materials within a 100-mile radius, and agricultural produce and requisites within 150 miles.

D. W. Hill (Transport) Ltd. also asked for permission to add a 7+-ton bulker to its fleet, in substitute for a 5-ton tipper.

Four other applications to carry goods for E. V. Bent Ltd., and Kenneth Wilson South Ltd., were withdrawn.

Objecting to the applications were Knowles Transport Ltd., E. J. and J. B. Hurry, P. C. Howard Ltd., J. Smith Haulage Ltd. and Contractors (Peterborough) Ltd.

Mr. Hill told the deputy LA that Castor Haulage has one artic and D. W. Hill (Transport) has five, all operating on B-licence.

"Usually I have to hire vehicles because of the restricted radius," he said. He was being asked more' and more to work over longer distances.

Documents from customers supporting Mr. Hill's application were produced.

Mr. J. Green, for the objectors, asked Mr. Hill if all the letters produced as evidence were solicited.

Mr. Hill replied that all but one of them were sent after requests from him.

Mr. Hill admitted that to a certain extent his vehicles are under employed, but he said this was because of the difficulties caused by the distance restrictions.
