FERRYMASTERS is now competing on equal terms with its European haulage counterparts as its first 38 tonne lorries went into operation this week.
The P&O subsidiary now has 25 three-axle tractive units on the road, and within a year its entire United Kingdom fleet of 190 units will be operating at 38 tonnes.
An initial order is for 20 Mercedes-Benz 2028LS models (CM, April 30) and 40 Scania 112s, and Ferrymasters is showing interest in the 2025 model which will soon come off the production line.
It offers a kerb weight of 7,100kg, around 800kg lighter than the 2028, and it has a less powerful V8 engine rated at 247bhp, compared to 276bhp on the 2028.
Mercedes hopes Ferrymasters' remaining order for 40 units to make up its initial 100 unit order will be for 2025s. Alan Grigg, Mercedes' product marketing manager, told CM that the 2025 was born out of interest shown by Ferrym asters.
