RUBBISH is one of the causes of serious accidents on Britain's roads says the AA magazine Drive. The rubbish is left deliberately by motorists and some is debris falling off lorries.

And the AA claims that one answer would be to follow the example of Russia and fine litterbugs.

Investigations have shown that 260 tons of litter is picked up from the 1,000 miles of motorway in this country each week, with eight times that amount lying uncollected on the other roads of Britain.

The AA survey over a 17-mile section of motorway from Watford to Luton revealed 18 tons of rubbish from an old washing machine to frilly underwear.
