RESTRICTIONS on the numbers of vehicles operated under the Merchandise Licence system in Ireland are to be cut by new regulations to be introduced under the new Irish Transport Bill.

Vehicles under six metric tons will be free from all controls as will the carriage of wheat, oats and barley from farms during the harvest season.

Irish Transport Minister Mr Peter Barry al5r_, proposes to bring hauliers at present exempt from control under the licensing system. This will affect operators in Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Galway. The measure is aimed at improving the quality of haulage—but light vehicles will not be affected.
