DEMOUNTABLE body-system builders have joined together in a new group of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
The new group held its first meeting at SMMT headquarters when Freight Bonallack managing director Mr Harry Bills was elected chairman of the nine-company group.
Aims of the group will be to study the problems of the present inconsistency of demountable body licensing that exists in certain areas of Britain and in TIR use.
It will also be looking to improve the flow of statistics on the sales and production of bodies, and generally promoting the benefits of the demountable system to industry.
Mr Bills said after the first meeting that the group would be trying to remove limitations that are hindering expansion in the field. He also hoped there would be a move towards interchangability of bodies.
Many potential customers were reluctant to convert their fleets to the demountable systems because of the dependence on one manufacturer caused by the variation in coupling designs.
The group will be meeting on June 10 and it is inviting demountable body makers not already represented to join. Anyone interested should contact Mr Harold Garratt at the SMMT, Forbes House, Halkin Street, London SW1, for further details.
One of the first actions of the new group will be to set up a technical sub-committee
