• The Department of the Environment vithdrew summonses for overloading /chicks against 18 hauliers at Middlesnough on Wednesday because the veighbridge used for the tests was found 'aulty.
The operators had faced a total of 224 tharges, some alleging that lorries were yverloaded by up to 19 tons, said a Northern traffic area spokesman in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The checks were made in November and December last year, using a weighbridge owned by a bulk liquid haulier outside a 'depot in Cargo Fleet Road, Middlesbrough.
The spokesman said: "The bridge was tested by weights and measures officials in January and was found to show inaccuracies of up to 3 and 4 divisions, each measured in 281b units. It is a private weighbridge and there is no blame attached to the owners but it was decided to abandon the tests and the summonses have been withdrawn.
"During the tests, no intimation was made against vehicles found to be up to 4 tons overladen. One lorry though was 19 tons over the top and others were up to 14 tons."
