• The move by the Minister for Transport Industries to simplify the law on bus and coach drivers' hours (CM, March 5) has been welcomed by the industry. "In the coaching field", say the PRTA, PVOA, APPTO and SPPTA, in a joint statement, "the relaxations will mean that activities at present curtailed or discontinued may be resumed, as from Whitsun."

16. Autofare ticket issuing equipment is to be tried out on two one-man buses at Derby in an effort to speed passenger loading. Mr P. G. Crook, deputy general manager and chief traffic officer of Derby Corporation Transport, said it was hoped that with the co-operation of the public the experimental equipment would cut passenger hoarding time by half. The buses fitted with the equipment will bear distinctive signs, reminding passengers to tender the exact fare.

• Comparisons between the costs to the passengers of different forms of inland transport were made in the Commons last week by Mr Eldon Griffiths, Under-Secretary for Environment. The latest available figures were for 1969, he said, when the average cost per mile was 1.1p for British Railways, I.4p for London Underground, and I.2p for buses and coaches. But costs of any form of transport varied widely according to circumstances, and average figures had to be treated with reservation.

• United Automobile Servicgs Ltd, Darlington, is to spend £200,000 on the redevelopment of the North Road bus station at Durham City, but work is not expected to begin until 1972. The bus station will have a new layout with rear access road, and the present North Road entrance will be used as an exit only. A new .canteen and shop will also be built.
