• Mr Richard Sharpies, Minister of State, announced last week that regulations to control the transport by road of corrosive substances will come into force on July 1.
The regulations provide that certain basic safety requirements must be observed during the conveyance, loading and unloading of some 120 corrosive substances, and require both the vehicles and the containers to be distinctly marked in a prescribed manner.
The regulations require steps to be taken to prevent spillage of corrosive substances; prohibit the carriage with corrosives of certain substances or articles which are liable to cause fire or explosion; make fire extinguishers compulsory equipment and require the vehicle operators to ensure the regulations are brought to the attention of employees.
The regulations are "The Corrosive Substances (Conveyance by Road) Regulations 1970".
