AN unusual farm-tractor demonstration was staged last week at Peterborough. A party of '17 agriculturists, including Lord de Ramsey, ehairmqn of Hunts and Soke of Peterborough A.E.C. Machinery Committee, and deputy chairman of Hunts and Soke Of Peterbordugh A.E.C., toured the Oxney Road works of F. Perkins, Ltd., to see the Perkins P6 oil engine being manufactured according to "flow production" methods, and, a Fordscm Maior tractor powered by that engine.

The fuel consumption of the Perkinsengined tractor , was stated to be approximately half that of the paraffinengined machine when ploughing. On other farm work, in which the power demand was less, the comparative fuel snyings with the oil engine were much greater, so that, taking an all-the-year average use of the tractor for all-round farming, a saving of 60-70 per cent of fuel was effected.

There was said to be a further economy, in that no petrol was needed to start the oil engine, as was necessary in the case of the paraffin engine.

Maintenance was stated to be no more than was within the capability of the average farm worker or mechanic. The prime essentials were clean fuel and lubricating oil, and aitention to filters for both, The batteries should have careful attention, so as to ensure easy starting.
