Details of a New Service which is to be Inaugurated by Eniway Motor Tours.
IT is interesting to note that day and night services between London and Glasgow, with Manchester as the halfway point of call, will be inaugurated at Whitsuntide, and it will be possible to make the through journey of 400 miles in 24 hours. The organizing of this travel facility has been undertaken by Eniway Motor Tours, of Manchester, a firm whose enterprises in longdistance passenger transport have been referred to from time to time in the columns of The Commercial Motor.
They have in commission at • the present time two Daimler, three. Reo and three Gilford coaches, and this firm have entered into contracts for the hire of 20 supplementary vehicles to maintain services which have been already arranged. The hired motor coaches comprise Leyland Lionesses, Leyland Tigers, Tilling-Stevens, Lancias, Gilfords, Maudslays, Bristols and De Dions. Negotiations have been proceeding for the temporary acquisition of a vehicle of Federal make, which will be tested on the ManchesterLondon route with a view to the ultimate utilization of the vehicle on this journey. The motor coaches commissioned by Eniway Motor Tours are of the all-weather type with fixed rear domes and sunshine heads.
"We are planning for a coach to leave Manchester for Glasgow and another to leave Manchester for London at 11 p.m. each day," said Mr. S. Wade, manager of Eniway Motor Tours, in an interview with a representative of The Commercial Motor. "At the present time there are three departures from London to Manchester and three from Manchester to London each day, at 8.30 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. respectively, and by introducing night coaches we shall be able to ensure conifortable, continuous journeys for passengers desiring to travel long distances. The coach leaving London at 30 R.M. arrives at Manchester at 6.45 p.m. Passengers disembark and dine, and, perhaps, pay a visit to the theatre,
returning in time to catch the coach leaving at 11 p.m. for Glasgow. We calculate that the destination should he reached by 7 a.m, next day, after allowing for stops at Shap, Carlisle, Beattock and any other places. The distance from London to Manchester is 188 miles and from Manchester to Glasgow 213 miles.
"The 11 p.m. Coach from London arrives in Manchester at 7 a.m. and passengers will have sufficient time in which to enjoy breakfast, after which they may join the 8.30 a.m. coach to Glasgow, if they desire to take to the road with as little delay as possible. The day journey to Glasgow can be completed by 7 p.m.
"From this you will understand that this is a duplicate service between Glasgow and London, enabling passengers to travel either by day or by night, or by day and night, just as the mood takes them. As Manchester is approximately midway betvVeen these two great centres, convenient arrangements can be made for passengers to break the journey here if they so desire," It will be cheaper to travel from Glasgow to London than from London to Glasgow, the fare for the journey from Glasgow to London being 27s. 6d. single and 50s. return, whilst for the journey from London to Glasgow the single rate is 355., a return ticket costing 58s. It may not be inappropriate to mention that the single third-class railway fare from Manchester to Glasgow is 27s. 11d, and from Manchester to London 23s.
On the Glasgow-Manchester section six coaches will be in regular commission. At the present time Eniway Motor Tours despatch one coach per day to Glasgow, and this leaves at 8.30 a.m. For the separate services (a) Manchester-London and (b) Manchester-Glasgow the tariffs are as follow:— Manchester-London, 16s. fid. single, 30s. return; Manchester-Glasgow, 21s. single, 35s. return. A considerable number of return bookings is made.
