While the debate around cycle safety continues, spare a thought for amphibians in Hampshire. According to local media, the toads are hop ping to it and attempting to cross Gorley Road in Ringwood to spawn in the nearby lakes (something that will continue until April).

But this biological urge comes at quite a cost, with estimates suggesting that about 67% of the leathery skinned would-be-parents making road crossings for this purpose don't make it. With some 800 spawning sites intersected by congested roads, charity Froglife has said more needs to be done to grant toads safe passage (avoiding the embrace of an artic's wheels) otherwise the "common" tag may soon have to be dropped.
