Southampton-based !litter Brothers laid off five drivers last week blaming poor trading conditions sparked by growing competition in the area.
The company confirms that it made five drivers redundant, along with two administrative staff. The redundancies follow moves by other local companies to reduce part-time driver working, in response to toughening conditions in an area previously seen as robustly healthy for the haulage industry.
Local firms blame greater competition for backloads among both local and outside firms for the jobs squeeze.
