• A truck powered by coal slurry could be on the cards.
Detroit Diesel of America is running'a feasibility study for the US government, using one cylinder of a heavy-duty engine running on a coal-and-water slurry. If successful, Detroit will test the fuel in multicylinder engines in the laboratory, after which a trial in a working truck is possible.
A Chicago gas research institute is also paying Detroit to develop and test a 6V-92 direct-injection natural gas engine, and two other gas companies are funding Detroit Diesel research into a compression-ignition prechamber natural-gas engine. Both projects are designed to produce a "diesel-like" engine with high efficiency and low emissions, according to the manufacturer.
