• Tate & Lyle Distribution Services has completed the second stage of a restructuring programme which will provide a closer integration between Tate & Lyle's sugar marketing, production and transport operations, and will help contain unit costs. TLDS is also aiming to boost its turnover by 10% during 1987.
The reorganisation involves the merging and renaming of selected parts of ILDS's former Bulk Products and Packed Products (including Silver Roadways) divisions. Silver Roadways/Bulk Services will administer all outside contracted and hired vehicles, as well as providing general haulage clearing house-services to non-group customers. SR/BS will also be responsible for the management and marketing of the Bulk Services tanker fleet to non-group customers.
TLDS's Contracts division, which provides third-party warehousing and distribution services, will remain unaltered.
During the coming year Silver Roadways/Bulk Services plans to expand its activities in general haulage brokerage, and to increase its tanker business in the movement of food products.
The current TLDS fleet of around 300 artics and rigids is expected to expand to around 350 vehicles due to extra business generated by the TLDS Contracts division.
Among the new business recently won by TLDS Contracts is a 15-month warehousing and distribution contract with William Niorrisam
Supermarkets, the Yorkshirebased supermarketing group.
The contract involves the warehousing of over 400 product lines and their delivery to Morrison's 35 stores. To handle the work the Contracts division will be using two artic units and two rigids as dedicated vehicles, supplemented where necessary with vehicles from its
Brighouse depot.
Last year TLDS had a turnover of £31 million — by the end of September 1987, managing director Tony Stanton expects this to grow to 834 million.
Although Tate & Lyle does not publish the annual profit figures of its individual operating divisions, TLDS is known to be operating at a profit.
