Most authorities and private waste operators are now processing significant proportions of their waste through recycling centres before taking the residue to landfill. As a consequence, operators are now specifying many of their collection vehicles without off-road ability,
"Using more steering, push and tag axles reduces tyre wear, turning circle, fuel consumption and weight. These benefits are also available on four-axle trucks with the tridem bogie."
