DRIVER LICENSING IN The Government has announced the long-awaited changes to the licensing system for truck and bus drivers. El From the beginning of 1991 experienced drivers will be permitted to drive large buses with up to eight passengers without a further test, provided they meet the health and conduct standards of PCV (passenger-carrying vehicle) drivers. Anyone who has yet to pass their ordinary driving test, however, will also have to pass their PCV test before they are allowed to drive large buses.
E Drivers of preserved or historic buses will also be exempt from the new PCV licensing requirements.
0 New drivers will have to take a test before they are allowed to haul any large drawbar trailers.
0 Drivers of school buses will no longer be exempt from the vocational driver licensing requirements.
E The use of PSV badges by bus and coach drivers will be discontinued.
The Department of Transport had wanted ordinary licence holders to pass a test on a rigid vehicle before being allowed to train on an articulated vehicle, but this proposal has been dropped.
