Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

of or read Maurice Saunders' book Stories of Round Timber Haulage, which has been recently reprinted to meet demand.

While the author was working on this book in conjunction with his publishers, he collapsed with a serious heart condition, which meant a spell in the London Brompton Hospital, which transformed his health.

In gratitude, Maurice made a tape called A Timberman's Scrapbook — a fascinating mixture of first-hand stories, appropriate music and recordings of journeys. The proceeds of this tape, which sells at £5, have reached over £1,300 for the Corda Scan Fund (Coronary Artery Disease Research Association). We promised Maurice that we would make an effort to help him reach his second £1,000. We have reserved 500 copies of his book Stories of Round Timber Haulage" and for each copy ordered from us marked "Corda Scan Fund", we will donate 21. Cheques!postal orders should be made out to Cortney Publications for £8.95 per copy, which will be sent post-free.

Norman Gurney Managing director Cortney Publications Luton, Bedfordshire SAD AT JOB LOSSES • I feel so sad reading your article on Plaxton cutbacks (CM May 17).

I recently wrote to my local MP concerning the possible import of Ikarus coach bodies. The letter was referred to John Butcher, a junior minister at the Department of Trade and Industry. His reply was that only 2% of imports come from Eastern European countries.

It seems to me that the loss of further British jobs in the motor industry is irrelevant as far as the present Government is concerned.

C. Evans Droylesden Greater Manchester RETIREMENT PROVISION

• In response to D E Allen's letter (CM, April 19) requesting comment on his views of the proposed Social Security Bill concerned with retirement pension benefits, I must agree with his concern that the administration problems of "allowing every employee to 'do their own thing' could be enormous and that a

joint approach to the subject by employers and employees should be encouraged."

It is in fact with this very objective in mind that the Road Haulage Association (via its associate company, RHA Insurance Services) has established recently a special industry-wide retirement benefits scheme.

The scheme is designed specifically not only to meet the requirements of both the present and the proposed legislation, but also the particular requirements of the road haulage industry.

Already, since the beginning of the year when the scheme started, there has been an encouraging response from both employers and employees.
